Read
Psychology Level · Intermediate Aliases: hand reading, range reading
A read uses range, sizing and action information to infer what an opponent is likely holding.
What is Read
Reading a hand means narrowing an opponent’s possible range step by step, using position, preflop action, bet sizing, timing, historical tendencies and how the board changes. A good read is not guessing two exact cards — it is judging which value hands, bluffs and medium holdings still plausibly exist. Live physical information is supporting evidence only; sample size and context beat any single expression. Every new community card and every action should update the range, and you should not decide on an answer first and then look for evidence. Reads work online too, based on frequency and sizing. When information is thin, holding several possibilities open beats false confidence.

Example
An opponent opens from early position, bets small on the flop, then bets large on the turn. Rather than guessing at AK, list the strong hands, draws and bluffs that remain plausible, and narrow further on the river action.
Common mistakes
- Thinking hand reading means naming their exact two cards. The work is building a range and narrowing it street by street.
- Believing one action proves strength. Sizing, position, sample and the whole line have to be read together.
