Overbet
Action Level · Intermediate Aliases: over-betting, betting over pot
An overbet is a bet larger than the current pot — betting more than 100 into a pot of 100.
What is Overbet
An overbet is a single bet that exceeds the size of the pot, such as betting 18BB into 12BB. The large size offers the opponent a worse price to call and earns more with strong value hands. The flip side is that a failed bluff costs more, so an overbetting range is usually polarised toward very strong value and well-chosen bluffs. A stronger hand does not automatically justify a bigger bet. You need a nut advantage on that board while the opponent’s medium-strength hands are capped. Against a player who does not fold, lean toward value; only add bluffs against someone who folds too much. Do not fire large simply for the show of force.

ActionRiver bet of 18BB into a 12BB pot with T♥8♥
Example
You hold T♥8♥ on the button and the river completes 9♠7♦6♣2♥K♣, leaving you with a ten-high straight. With 12BB in the pot you bet 18BB, using your nut advantage to charge two pair, sets and lower straights.
Common mistakes
- Thinking an overbet just means close to pot-sized. It only qualifies once the bet genuinely exceeds the pot.
- Assuming every strong hand suits an overbet. Without enough worse hands able to call, a large size chases the value away.
