Cooler
Hands Level · Intermediate Aliases: set over set, premium collision
A cooler is a collision where both players hold very strong hands and neither can reasonably avoid it.
What is Cooler
A cooler is when two players make hands that are strong relative to the board, and getting the chips in is the reasonable outcome for both — a set against a bigger set, the nut flush against the second nut flush. It is not simply losing a big pot: even with correct play, the hand distribution makes the collision hard to escape. Judge a cooler from the information available at the time, not by using the result to excuse a mistake. Calling off a stack with one pair on a board where straights and flushes are obviously there is usually not a cooler. It only qualifies when both ranges genuinely contain premium value hands. The point is to review the decision, not to blame luck.

Example
You hold K♥K♣ and your opponent Q♥Q♣ on a board of K♠Q♠8♦2♣3♥. Both flop a set neither can fold, and your kings win. That is a textbook cooler.
Common mistakes
- Labelling any big losing pot a cooler. It only counts when both ranges are legitimately premium and the collision is hard to avoid.
- Assuming a cooler needs no review. Bet sizing and effective stacks can still make the loss larger or smaller than it needed to be.
